breaking the Chains: High control groups, cults, & religious trauma - June 13, 2023
When you hear the word “cult,” what do you think of? Maybe it’s people drinking koolaid or building a commune back in the 70s. But high control groups exist now, they are everywhere, they are extremely damaging, and no one thinks they are signing up for a cult when they first get involved.
This week, I’m talking with my guest Dr. Quincee about:
1. What a high control group is.
2. Our own personal experiences with religious trauma.
3. Red and green flags to watch out for when joining a group or community.
4. How people get sucked in to a cult and why they stay.
5. The phases of healing and deconstruction after being in a high control group, religion, or cult.
6. Tips for deconstructing on your own, and for supporting a loved one who you think might be involved in a cult or high control group.

How to make decisions with confidence - March 1, 2023
Many of us were never taught how to make decisions with confidence. Some of us came from a religious background, some of us encountered controlling environments, and some of us were simply taught to trust our parent’s choices rather than making our own. Now, as moms, we often find ourselves struggling with people pleasing or an inability to trust ourselves.
But when we understand what’s holding us back, we can empower ourselves to make decisions. Today, I’m joined by Dr. Quincee Gideon, clinical psychologist and specialist in religious trauma and cult recovery to discuss how to work through our past and make decisions with confidence.

Dr. Gideon and Dr. Tara Egan from One Day You’ll Thank Me podcast have a discussion around religious trauma, cult life, and the impact it can have on mental health.
“When we start to pull apart religious trauma, our beliefs, and the specific roles we are taught, we have to determine what’s left of our identity.” Dr. Quincee said.
It can be very hard to step outside of religious beliefs and start the process of pulling them apart. In coercive religious environments, the very idea of questioning is often associated with a lack of faith.

regulating your nervous system - November 10,2021
Dr. Gideon and Erica from Happy as a Mother Podcast talk about how we can better understand our nervous system and how to manage its responses more effectively.
“For a trauma survivor to start feeling really empowered again, we have to help them understand that trauma lives inside the body and it does so to varying degrees,” Dr. Quincee said. When we experience trauma, it triggers our nervous system.
She explained our nervous system was passed down to us from generations before us. There was a time in human history when the flight or fight response literally kept us alive, and in some ways, it may still. Imagine a soldier at war. Fight or flight matters.

when treatment becomes trauma - July 28,2021
Dr. Gideon and Erica from Happy as a Mother Podcast talk about medical PTSD and the trauma of birth, motherhood, and fertility. We chat through realistic ways that a mother, woman, or birthing parent can advocate for themselves in medical settings. You can hear more about regulating the nervous system and processing trauma after a medical event.
“Dr. Quincee pointed out that doctors are like gatekeepers with access to all the specialized knowledge to make a diagnosis and the means to treat the problem. The rest of us only have our lived experience of how our bodies work and only interact with doctors when those bodies aren’t working right. But the medical community has no training in psychology, so sometimes when there are no obvious reasons for symptoms it’s human nature to dismiss them. That’s a problem. We should be able to seek healthcare without being completely dismissed. Dr. Quincee said the medical community needs psychological training.”
